Gallagher’s Rescue Story

Gallagher at time of rescue

Gallagher 48 hours after surgery to remove his leg

Gallagher is a super sweet and handsome young man. He is also EXTREMELY lucky to be alive. Gallagher was abandoned and suffered an animal attack leaving him with  infected bite wounds to his back leg. He managed to escape the attack but with no antibiotics or any other care, the infection slowly and painfully disintegrated the joint and the muscle. The pain was excruciating and finding food was a challenge.

Gallagher finally wandered into a feeding location of a feral colony, where he was rescued by the caretaker of the colony,  but by then he already had lost the use of his leg and he was emaciated. The caretaker did not have the financial means to bring him to a vet, so he reached out for help. When BDRF got the call from one of our volunteers we immediately picked him up. Our vet kept him in the hospital and put him on pain medication and antibiotics. When the vet examined the x-rays, he called us with the bad news that the leg could not be saved. We were just glad that we got him in time to save his life and that removing the leg was going to take away the pain! Just 48 hours after this major surgery he was noticeably relaxed and happy! He doesn’t even mind the double e-collars!!
