Big Mike’s Rescue Story

Big Mike, near death

Big Mike, cured!

Mike was days away from death with a disease that has taken many of our cats over the years. Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP) is a viral disease caused by certain strains of the Feline Coronavirus.  It is present in the gastrointestinal tract of most cats, but in a few it mutates to cause a disease that up until recently was untreatable and always fatal.  It’s a helpless feeling to get the diagnosis and know there is nothing that can be done. Once the symptoms start, cats die in days to weeks.

We heard about a new experimental treatment and even though it was very expensive, we decided to try it. This new treatment gives hope and a chance to save cats from a horrible disease. It is still in a trial phase, so not only did we save Big Mike, but we advanced the study so that some day it will be an affordable and widely available treatment. It’s absolutely ground-breaking in the feline world.  The cure came out of the research for the COVID 19 vaccines and treatments. At least there was a small silver lining to the horrible pandemic. You can read more about the person who started spreading the word here: https://www.theatlantic.com/science/archive/2020/05/remdesivir-cats/611341/

Mike underwent 84 days of daily treatments and was considered cured! Mike is feeling great! It is a GREAT JOY to see him run and play in the sun and grass. He has more energy and kitten-like antics now than he did before the disease. He got a second chance, and he knows it. We fully expected to lose him. It’s truly a miracle.
