Luca’s Rescue Story
Luca came to Better Days after being surrendered to Animal Control because of severe aggression. Unable to safely manage him, he was scheduled for euthanasia. Knowing that Better Days specializes in giving the most challenging cats a second chance, another rescue reached out and asked if we could help. We said yes.
From the moment Luca arrived, it was clear he had experienced significant abuse. The mere sight of a raised hand would send him into a panic. He was highly reactive, incredibly combative, and at times genuinely dangerous. We housed him in a separate room, and even entering to feed him was a challenge because he would charge the door. Volunteers called him “the scary cat,” but deep down we could see glimpses of a cat who wanted to be loved.
But, healing doesn't happen overnight. Very slowly and very deliberately, we began working to earn Luca's trust. We celebrated every small victory—a calmer reaction, curious glance, a moment of hesitation before fear took over. Years ago, someone told me that when working with troubled animals, "you need to trust to be trusted". I've never forgotten that lesson, and I carry it with me whenever I help an animal learn that not every human intends to hurt them.
Over the past 18 months, there have been plenty of ups and downs, but Luca has made incredible progress. Today, he enjoys being petted and even kissed on the nose. While he still startles if a hand moves too quickly in front of him, those moments are now few and far between.
For the first time, I truly feel that Luca is content. He's learning to leave his painful past behind and embrace the safety, love, and stability he deserves. He's a very good boy—and we're so proud of how far he's come.
