Oscar

Picture
Oscar enjoying the outdoor enclosure
Oscar is a very friendly stray that came to us on deaths door. He was skin and bones and so weak he could not stand up. He laid flat, not even picking up his head. We brought him in to our vet on a Saturday and the vet  cautioned me that he may not make the weekend. He had "no fight" left in him. I had to agree, I was very worried and sad for him. I could just feel that he had given up. As it turned out, Oscar was severely diabetic. His diabetes went uncontrolled and he did not have proper food and care.  At the sanctuary he continued to lay in his cage flat out like he was already dead. he could not even get up to urinate, but would urinate laying there and he would be soaked in it daily and would need to be bathed. I remember talking to my sister on the phone and telling her that I was not sure I could save this one, he just didn't have one ounce of energy left. I think that after several days of caring for him he realized I was trying and he tried too! After a week he still would not stand up but at least had his head up. It was a scary time, very nerve wracking!

But we did not give up. Months of intensive and dedicated diabetic care, including testing his sugar 3 times a day, adjusting his insulin, making sure he was eating and talking with our vet sometimes 3 times a day, we finally started to get ahead of his diabetes! Oscar has gained 3 pounds! and after having crazy blood sugar numbers, sometimes over 750 (Normal cats are under 200) his sugar is now hovering around 100 and he no longer needs insulin! Cats are one of the only species that can overcome diabetes and Oscar did it!! We still test his sugar daily and will watch him closely but we couldn't be happier for this very sweet cat!!
