Finn's Story

Picture
Finn the night he was rescued (left) Finn after his surgeries (right)

I discovered Finn while I was trapping feral cats for spay/neuter.  I approached him with a can of food. Finn was a little apprehensive at first, but hunger won over fear and he came to eat. Once I noticed that his eye was missing, I knew I had to grab him at that moment. I immediately took him to the vet. Other than his ruptured eye, and after being treated for fleas, worms and ear mites he was determined to be a very healthy kitten.

Finn looks to be a Maine Coon mix and he is a very special kitty. Despite his ordeal he is friendly, gentle and very affectionate. The minute after I picked him up in the parking lot he started purring and he hasn’t stopped since. He absolutely knew he was saved. That night he slept soundly with a full belly for the first time in who knows how long. Finn has another special feature that just adds to the cuteness factor:  he has extra toes on all 4 feet!! He’s going to live up to his Maine Coon heritage and be a large cat; he’s much bigger than the other kittens his age.

Dr. Sandefer felt that the best thing for Finn was to clean out the eye socket and sew it closed. This will
make him more comfortable and prevent any future
infections.

Finn had his surgery and all seemed well but unfortunately it turned out to be a bit of a roller coaster ride for the little guy. He began having complications soon after the surgery.

When they do this kind of surgery they place a pad in the space where the eye used to be and then sow it all closed. The body normally accepts the pad and it stays there forever. In Finns case his body was rejecting the pad. The area was not infected but fluid was building and it started to drain from his nose and the incision. I was in contact with Dr. Dave and a couple of days after the surgery Finn had to go back so that they could determine the best way to help him.

Finn stayed at the vet for a whole week as they kept the area draining and clean. Dr. Dave was hopeful that he would not have to go back in and remove the pad. While he was there Finn got a lot of love and attention, the staff treated him like a king. He had all kinds of special privileges and got carried around a lot! After a week things were looking much better and we thought we had avoided another surgery.

Finn came back home on a Friday night, played like crazy and was very happy! Unfortunately by Sunday evening the fluid began to build again and on Monday morning Finn had scratched the stitches out. I brought him back up to the vet and Dr. Dave decided he had to reopen the incision and remove the pad. So poor little Finn had a second surgery. He did very well and always maintained his loving personality.

Finn has come back home again and he looks GREAT!! He had a small amount of drainage the first  couple of days which concerned me but that has stopped and now he is playing and wresting with his friends!

He recently had the stiches removed and is now cone free!!!!!!  He couldn't be happier. The surgery area looks perfect and so does he. Once the cone was removed he was so excited to wrestle with his buddies again, and to groom himself! He's very particular about his good looks!

Finn's future is bright and he is ready to be loved! Soon all of his troubles will be forgotten.

Thanks to everyone who helped to save him, from donations to cover the cost of his care to the expert medical staff. It takes a team to save these guys and we have a GREAT team!!
